Description

The cranberry originates from North America. Known in some regions as the bog cranberry, it resembles a large lingonberry. What makes it special are its positive properties for a strong bladder and healthy urinary tract. This was already known to the Native Americans, for whom the cranberry was an integral part of their natural medicine. European settlers also recognized the value of this type of berry, and in the 1920s, American doctors were able to prove that cranberries possess natural antibacterial properties.

The substances responsible for this were discovered by scientists at Rutgers State University in New Jersey: They are, in particular, the natural phytonutrients known as proanthocyanidins (PAC) contained in cranberries, which play a major role in maintaining the health of the bladder and urinary tract. They prevent bacteria that are responsible for bladder and urinary tract problems, such as E. coli, from colonizing the area. They effectively "coat" these harmful bacteria so that they can no longer adhere and are flushed out. The health-promoting effect of the cranberry is also confirmed by a study from the French Food Safety Agency (AFSSA). Consequently, the AFSSA states that a daily intake of at least 36 mg of proanthocyanidins (PAC) has a positive influence on the health of the urinary tract and bladder.

Other ingredients that make cranberries so valuable include flavonoids, oleanolic acid, pectin, citric acid, boron, zinc, and phosphorus. They do not only have a beneficial effect on the urinary organs—which, due to anatomy, affect women in particular—but cranberries are also said to have an anti-aging effect. However, raw cranberries are very acidic and have a bitter note—in other words: they are not exactly tasty. To make them edible, they must be heavily sweetened, which is not necessarily good for teeth or the figure. It is therefore more sensible and practical to take cranberry extract in the form of capsules.
