The evening primrose is native to North America. There, it was used by Native Americans to alleviate skin conditions. They would grind the evening primrose seeds to create effective remedies for various ailments, such as sore throats or stomach aches. Above all, the indigenous people of North America used evening primrose for the treatment of wounds, chronic skin irritations, and skin diseases. In the 17th century, the evening primrose was brought to Europe, where it quickly gained popularity due to its phenomenal healing properties. The evening primrose got its name because its flowers strangely only open in the evening when it gets dark.
In modern medicine, evening primrose is used for many skin conditions, as evening primrose oil nourishes and soothes very dry and irritated skin. Because it improves skin hydration and supports the skin's natural lipid barrier, it is primarily used for rough skin and itching. The scientific background for the positive effect of evening primrose oil: Evening primrose oil (Oenothera biennis oleum), obtained by pressing or extracting the seeds, is an important source of linolenic acid, which is converted into gamma-linolenic acid. This is an essential fatty acid that the body cannot produce itself and therefore must be supplied through daily nutrition.
This unsaturated fatty acid plays an important role in human metabolism. It is necessary for human cell structure and also has an anti-inflammatory effect. Gamma-linolenic acid is a precursor to essential tissue hormones called prostaglandins, which are of great importance for our skin. Prostaglandins improve skin functions and ensure a clear and healthy skin structure. As a result, the complexion becomes more beautiful, smoother, and younger.
