About the Book
The intestine forms the largest interface between the body and the outside world. Around one ton of nutrients is absorbed annually through an adult's intestine. At the same time, the intestinal mucosa is an important barrier against harmful substances such as allergens, pathogens, and pollutants like heavy metals, etc. When this barrier function of the intestinal mucosa is impaired and antigens can flow uncontrollably into the body, it is referred to as "leaky gut." A growing number of studies show that many diseases—from chronic inflammatory bowel diseases and autoimmune diseases to mental illnesses—are apparently linked to leaky gut syndrome. This book first describes the biomedical processes involved in leaky gut, then proceeds to establish the connection to associated diseases. Subsequently, diagnostic possibilities and treatment options are presented, with microbiological therapy playing a key role. Finally, concrete case studies are presented. This book is primarily aimed at therapists and nutritionists, but is also understandable for interested laypeople.
